Welcome to the Woods

Welcome to my neck of the woods, a place where I endeavor to provide a voice of optimistic-realism in a sea of passivity and doomerism. For our only way forward is to work together while tackling the great problems of our age. But to do so we must approach the situation with both a youthful optimism tempered by a realistic understanding of the future we can hope to build. For it is not just the future of humanity that rests upon our shoulders, but by extension the future of all complex life of the earth. Though we may not save all life, we must strive to do the best we can.

In these writings I strive to provide you with new perspectives (lenses) in which we can view the world. Through which we can re-frame the questions we have and the decisions we need to make. For to simply survive is no longer enough, and to do anything more we must address the fundamental cultural problems that led us here. By extension we must also address the philosophy (or lack thereof) that underpins our societies culture. For technology alone is not a panacea for the problems ahead. It must be a union of technology, culture, and philosophy. Anything less will have us doomed to a cycle of repeated failure and collapse.

So we must come to terms that the visions and philosophies of the past are but a stepping stone to this moment. We must now work together to establish a forward thinking modern philosophy. A practical philosophy that goes beyond the human centric thought of the past, but instead incorporates the larger world in which we are but a part. A philosophy accessible to all, for if philosophy is the underpinning of our culture it cannot be the purview of a choice few in some ivory tower. Through our philosophy and culture we influence both our views on the world and our decisions as individuals and as a society. And when this underpinning is allowed to deteriorate, we allow it to be replaced by something that promotes the vices of human nature. We see this in America today, whose philosophy was allowed to be supplanted by their economic system. And now all their decisions, actions, discussions, and culture is viewed through the lens of Capitalism.

In closing, As Teddy Roosevelt once said "Spend himself in a worthy cause;" - I aim to spend my energy through the writing of essays, letters, and musings. I hope, through this work, together we can build the foundations needed to build a better tomorrow. For "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.", and though we may be the youth of today, we must start to work towards that better tomorrow. And though neither we nor our children might see the promise fulfilled, there is no better purpose for humanity than to become the shepherds of all life.
